There is currently no international protection for animals.
On the 8th of June 2006, an international campaign was launched to demand a United Nations Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare, similar to earlier initiatives such as declarations on human rights and the environment:

"In principle the Universal Declaration will call on the United Nations to recognise animals as sentient beings, capable of experiencing pain and suffering, and to recognise that animal welfare is an issue of importance as part of the social development of nations worldwide." - World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)

No problem :).
It's an issue that definitely needs to be raised on so many levels, whether it includes animal testing, hunting, pouching, fur ect. ect. As the UN stands for an international community, animals are part of that same international standing and deserve to be protected.
I personally think the campaign has strong legs to stand on as long as people give them strength!

It is strange but I never thought about a connection between the UN and animals. They don't really have a sub-organisation for animals as far as I know.

They don't, that's why this campaign has started: acknowledgment of the need to protect animals under international law.
