New Orleans hasn't been recovered much apparently, but I heard a couple of interesting (actually kind of sickening and nauseating) stories, and one of them is this. New Orleans had pretty strong Democrats support in the south. This is partly due to the fact that New Orleans had number of African American residents; African Americans generally support Democrats. However, since many of them have been removed from the city, the city has strong Republican support now. Furthermore, the majority of African Americans have been moved to Houston, which is a city that has very strong Republican support; their votes for Democrats have become meaningless. As a result of this, Republicans (the current administration) effectively eliminated strong Democrats support in one of major cities in US South.
... can this be true ...?
Blame the Democrates. They are too slow.

Woah no. I'm sorry, but ah, you can't really make New Orleans a partisan issue. I lived in New Orleans for nearly a year at one point, and I'll be point blank about it, the Democrats don't care any more about the black people down there than George Bush does. I'm not even saying this is a race thing either, so relax. New Orleans, and what's been going on there for years is an issue of economics, though the economic situation there is still very much what it is because of the things left undone after desegregation.
What has been happening in New Orleans is a crisis of human rights. Most of us don't really want to look at it that way because then it's not so easy to point a finger at the other guy. The truth is though, New Orleans was poor, and I mean dirt poor, corrupt and racist long before Katrina came along. As long as it wasn't pouring into people's living rooms, they didn't give a shit. It wasn't like someone was hiding it, nobody really cared, that's all. Most still don't even when it is pouring into their living room. Don't try and make this a party thing. We've had both Democrat and Republican presidents and congress' since those levees were originally built, and the people who said they weren't going to stand up were ignored by both.
If you want the Democrats to come back to those districts, they need something to come back to. Democrats haven't been fighting so hard to get New Orleans put back together either. They haven't even been fighting the profiteering of the insurance companies and the landgrabbers that's been going on down there. I'd bet that has something to do with the fact that insurance companies are a big national lobby and those landgrabbers are probably a big local campaign contributor too. Don't blame the either party. Blame the people across the country who are sitting there eating Bon Bons and complaining about their SUV's DVD player being on the fritz.
We're the most selfish nation in the world, and we're really only starting to see the price we're going to pay for it.
I am surprised about the lack of reconstruction efforts on both sites. New Orleans doesn't seem to be a worthy election topic.
Is anybody else surprised about the fact that the US builds the biggest embassy in Iraq (1 billion $) but doesn't really bother about New Orleans? But maybe I get it wrong?
