Kobra Rahmanpour is awaiting execution in Iran after killing her in-law in self-defence. The Iranian authorities sentenced her to death in January 2003 and despite many halts in the process of her sentence, she relies on the decision of the family of the deceased to either pass the implementation of her execution or excuse her. If they choose for her execution, it is believed to happen sometime after October 12th.
A woman who held the potential to lead a successful career, she was forced into marriage where she received regular phsyical and mental abuse from her husband. Kobra stated that when attacked by her mother in-law, the fight resulted in the death of her in-law in self-defence.
In addition to this, Kobra was only granted a lawyer at the beginning of her trial, thus ill-preparing her defence.
This is another example of the need for the abolishing of the death penalty and the unfair treatment of women in Iran.

Your Excellency,
I write to you today in great concern towards the awaiting execution of Kobra Rahmanpour, who was sentenced to death in January 2003 and has encountered stalls in the process of the execution. However, if the family of the murdered mother in-law of Kobra decides for the implementation of execution it is believed it shall take place sometime after October 12th.
There is great discontent with the conduct of the trial that took place as Kobra was not granted a lawyer until the beginning of the trial.
I, alongside Amnesty International, call for the Iranian authorities to commute the death sentence against Kobra Rahmanpour. Whilst Amnesty International recognises the rights of the authorities to bring to justice those suspected of a criminal offence it regards the death penalty as the most inhumane, cruel and degrading of punishment.
In addition, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAB) has stated that "Under the specific circumstances of this case and bearing in mind that she is being held on death row since long, the most appropriate remedy would be to obtain her exemption from the implementation of the capital punishment".
I have contacted you in order for you to support the calls in commuting the death sentence in the case of Kobra Rahmanpour and act in the removal of this sentence.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response in relation to this immensely crucial issue.
Yours sincerely,
