We turn back the page on another year, and ultimately the history books will decide what was important in 2006 and what wasn't.

Nationally, we were still fighting in Iraq. Economic prosperity was making only sporadic visits to southwestern Pennsylvania. In the greater Pittsburgh area, the Pirates improved during the second half of the year, but the Steelers needed a little bit longer to get their act together. Meanwhile, casino slots made a big play for Pittsburgh's North Side and won.

In PG East territory, billboards got a lot of attention in Monroeville, while Wilkins' police chief and a fired road crew worker took squabbles with the municipality into U.S. District Court. Controversy clouded the futures of the vacant Pennsylvania Elementary School in Norwin and three schools in Woodland Hills, including the former Turtle Creek High School, now East Junior High School.

Residents of a number of municipalities got stuck with tax increases. In Forest Hills, residents successfully blocked Progressive Insurance's plan to build a claims center.

Maybe 2006 wasn't our best year, but it sure was interesting. Here's a selection of the top, or at least most compelling, stories of the past 12 months.

There was contentious business waiting in the wings, but the mood was upbeat as Wilkins' re-elected officials -- Commissioners Frank Green and William G. Wilson Jr. and tax collector George Parado -- were sworn in. The commissioners chose Frank Greco as chairman, replacing Mr. Wilson, who had announced he was stepping down. Sylvia Martinelli replaced Mr. Greco as vice president.
