Vollständige Version anzeigen : Don't Dam the Mary
Queensland Premier Mr. Peter Beattie announced on Thursday, 27th April 2006 that the Qld Government proposes to build a mega-dam (more than 1.3 times the area of Sydney Harbour) on the Mary River at Traveston Crossing that will inundate the central Mary Valley in Queensland's Sunshine Coast hinterland. Up to that time, no information had been made public about ANY planning procedures or studies that justify this decision. There had been absolutely NO direct public notification or consultation regarding this decision other than via the media. The only information was that affected landholders (approximately 900) would be notified within 7 days and work would commence by June.
there are several endagered species that are likely to be destroyed if this dam goes ahead, just so a few city folk dont have to suffer water restrictions

maybe it has something to do with preventing a second katrina? But I don't know I don't live there.
There is no sane reason to dam this river but so many reasons not to
why can't people in the city learn to conserve water ?
I live in this area, this dam is WRONG !!
a label is
16-06-06, 19:28
I think most of the dams that were built so far weren't in favor of nature, animals and also people - think of all the deportation going on in India.
That something like that is happening in Australia is absolutely incredible. Is there anything happening against it?
There is a lot of opposition against it in the region, but we have a government that is determined to build the dam "No matter the cost", there is very little publicity anywhere else about what is going on.
A lot of people have little understanding of water conservation because they can turn on a tap and there will always be water, Living with only a tank for water, you learn to make it last even for a familly of 5, if you waste it you have no water.
Send letters to your government. Are there any rumors why the dam should be build? Has the Premier a close relationship with one of the firms?
there is a lot of letter writing, and petitions, some protests but little media coverage outside the local area, the dam issues makes a good smokescreen for the government to take the attention away from other problems.
Are there no demonstrations?
There have been some demonstrations but the media coverage of them has been poor.
Are you in some ways personal engaged with this case trusylver?
I live in the area and have signed the petitions but i am not directly involved, I just believe that it is WRONG.

water recycling report a move in the right direction but needs to go further
Queensland Democrats Senator Andrew Bartlett backed today’s announcement by Premier Beattie that water recycling is the best option for Toowoomba but said that it should not stop there and should apply across the board.
“Full recycling of our waste and storm water is the fairest, most reliable and environmentally sustainable way to go. Anything short of full recycling for South-East Queensland is a cop out,” Senator Bartlett said.
“The Government’s entrenched reliance on dam building to address our future water needs is clearly unsustainable, expensive and environmentally unsound. It is about time that the Premier took up the challenge to sell water recycling to Queenslanders in the South-East not just those in Toowoomba.”
“While it is a difficult political choice for the Government, to actively make the decision to work to overcome the ‘yuck factor’ will reap benefits for Queenslanders well into the future.
“SEQ water report estimates show that the potential indirect and direct use of recycled water supplies may be between 100 – 180 GL which can be produced at an estimated cost of between $250–550 million. This produces much more water and at half the cost of the proposed Traveston Dam.
“It makes sense to pursue the recycling option for South-East Queensland’’ Senator Bartlett concluded.

Latest update:
PROPOSED NEW DAMS BY QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT
In response to the overwhelming public interest in the Queensland Government’s proposed new dams, the Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Senator Ian Campbell, has confirmed that detailed proposals have yet to be received by the Australian Government.
The Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie, has announced proposals to construct two new dams in Queensland. He has announced proposals for the Traveston Dam on the Mary River and the Wyaralong Dam on Teviot Brook, a tributary of the Logan River.
Construction of these dams is expected to be completed by 2011.
Neither of the proposed dams have been referred to the Commonwealth for a decision on whether they require approval under federal environment law.
The Australian Government’s environment law, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), provides for the protection of certain defined matters of national environmental significance (NES). The matters of NES include world and national heritage properties, wetlands of international importance, migratory species, nationally threatened species and ecological communities, nuclear actions, and the Commonwealth area.
The Australian Government’s involvement in any development proposals is relevant only to these very specific matters.
Development proposals that are likely to have a significant impact on these matters must be assessed and approved by the Australian Government under the federal environment law. The EPBC Act cannot apply to those development proposals which are not likely to have a significant impact on these matters.
Once the referrals have been received, they will be given careful consideration as to the potential for the dams to have a significant impact on any of those environment matters protected under federal environment law, including nationally listed threatened species such as the Queensland Lungfish, Mary River Tortoise, and the Mary River Cod; endangered ecological communities; and Ramsar wetlands of international importance.
Should formal approval be required under the EPBC Act, the Australian Government would seek to work with Queensland to ensure that our environment assessment processes are coordinated.

Maryborough to Stage Historic Rally to Save the Mary
A historic re-enactment in Maryborough next Sunday [30 July] will also be a fight for the future of its river – the Mary.
The city will combine a celebration to mark a major milestone in its history with an all-day protest over the State Government’s plans to build a major dam on the Mary River upstream at Traveston.
The protest rally will include a flotilla of protest boats on the Mary near Queens Park.
Mayor Barbara Hovard said the Mary River was – and still is – the lifeblood of Maryborough – but it was now under great threat.
“Maryborough owes its very existence and amazing heritage as one of Queensland’s oldest cities and one of Australia’s most important ports to the Mary River,” she said.
“We had always planned a historic walk to commemorate a decision made 150 years ago by our early pioneers to move the original township up river to a deeper port where the city of Maryborough is today.
“Now we will also use the day to send a clear message to the Beattie Government that we do not want this dam on our river.
“They have decided they are going to build this dam, yet they have done no studies into the impact the dam is going to have downstream on the environment flows, or the effect it will have on the Great Sandy Strait at the mouth of the Mary.
As residents walk from the original Maryborough site to the "new" city”, “pioneers” (many descendants of early Maryborough residents) will recount stories of those early days – and also deliver poignant messages to Premier Beattie about the dam.
“Save the Mary” signs will accompany people in period costume pushing wheelbarrows with their worldly possessions in them.
The signs will also appear on horses and carts and vintage cars.
Maryborough’s MELSA members are all steamed up about the dam so will have protest signs prominently displayed on the Mary Ann, a working replica of the first steam engine build in Queensland.
The walk starts at the Original Maryborough Site in Aldridge Street at 9am with walkers being asked to turn up at 8.45am. It will finish in Queens Park amid Maryborough’s monthly Sunday in the Park.
The call is also out for all fishermen and recreational boaties to join a flotilla of protest vessels on the Mary opposite Queens Park at high tide on Sunday (1.15pm). Representatives from the region’s commercial fishermen have already committed to be there. They believe damming the river will have a devastating impact on local prawn and fish stocks.

From the newsletter:
• Subsequently our Chairman met with Peter Beattie and others and insisted that we have a Public Guardian. The past Governor Peter Arniston was recommended to lead this task force and was appointed by Premier Beattie. He will be there to look after us, the residents, and make sure that we are treated properly and fairly compensated should the dam go ahead. The Committee will watch closely the work of the taskforce. People will be strongly advised to take independent advice regarding the sale of their property, capital gains, displacement etc.
• On Thursday 7th, Kevin, Glenda and Tamielle met with the Greens and other environmental groups who are very supportive of us to form “The Dam Alternative Group”. Their aim - by Christmas they hope to have the people of Brisbane embracing the alternative to dams.
• At the Committee meeting on Monday 10th, the Regional Director of the Communities Dept. Peter Ryan, spoke to us about the One Stop Shop in Kandanga run by Life Line and totally apolitical. The Co-ordinator of this is Ken Campbell and they are there simply to look after our needs, to provide counselling and help where needed, to supply strategies for unemployment, to reassure and advise the elderly in our community. They are not interested in the politics of the dam and whether it should/should not be built but are there simply to help us in this terrible time of uncertainty. People need answers and they will do their best to comply.
• The DNR have promised a more accurate map in 9 weeks having withdrawn the previous map because the buffer zone had been omitted. Nine weeks is too long to wait and this must be expedited.
• On Tuesday 11th Nick Smith met with the Premier’s office to discuss his own personal situation and also to speak about a fair displacement package.
• On Thursday 13th Peter Arniston met with people at Kandanga. Time is of the essence and issues are critical.
• Steve Watson, a Lawyer from Maroochydore, has 6 lawyers prepared to work for us and he will co-ordinate this.
• Community Forums - It has been decided to have community forums at Kandanga, Imbil and Carters Ridge once a month to share information. These would take the place of a morning/afternoon tea and details will be given as soon as known
• On Saturday 15th Channel 9’s “60 MINUTES” with Ray Martin was in the valley interviewing people for their show. This aired Sunday 23rd July.
• Also on Saturday 15th Rick addressed the Uniting Church in Gympie
• It has been agreed that the committee’s link with the Brisbane based No Dam Coalition will be Glenda. It was also agreed to provide speaker(s) for the Toowoomba public meeting on 22nd July.
• Save the Mary River Support Rally was held on Sunday 16th July. Although the weather was inclement and the numbers were low, the speakers and musicians were excellent and the rally was thoroughly enjoyed by those who did attend.
• Wednesday 19th July – the Dam Busters Rally (under the guidance of Kevin Ingersole and the Green Team) was held at the Showground in Gympie. Numerous key speakers, Andrew Bartlett, Jeff Seeney, Cate Molloy, Bob Abbott, Peter Wellington, Greg Rogerson, David Gibson, Beryl Spencer, Greig Nissen, Jan Watt and Darryl Stewart all committed to stopping the dam and encouraged us to stay positive and focused on no dam at Traveston Crossing – the way forward. All guaranteed their help in every way possible. The audience was encouraged to help in every way they could without the use of violence or stupid tactics which would only be detrimental to our cause.
• 21st July – Former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachov attended the Earth Dialogue Forum in Brisbane. Information on our plight was given to him.
• King of the Mountain with radio coverage by Macca from ABC radio – Sunday 23 rd July. Steve Dennis was nominated to represent the committee at this event.
• On Saturday 29th July, members of the Committee went to Toowoomba in support of the Recyling of Water referendum. Unfortunately the result was
“NO”.
• Numerous radio and newspaper interviews have been carried out with committee members.
• On page 6 is a list of Politician’s names and address. Please write to these people expressing your thoughts and concerns about the proposed dam.

Some news:
As you might have heard, we have had a lot of trouble trying to organise a
suitable venue in Brisbane - all the best locations are ripped up for the
inner city busway project (eg. Roma Street Parklands, City Square) and
Southbank is not available on either Saturday 2 September or Sunday 3
September because of the River Festival (Riverfire is on the Saturday
Night). Our main objective was to get media coverage into Brisbane. But a
great alternative has emerged which will serve our purpose equally well and
which will mean we won't have to travel to Brisbane. And, it is focussed
specifically on our cause - saving the Mary River.
The Sunshine Coast Environment Council is organising a big gig in support of
the Mary River in Noosa on Saturday 2 September at the Noosa Riverstage,
Gympie Terrace, Noosaville. Because of Cate's Molloy's high profile stance
- there will be big media coverage across the Sunshine Coast and into
Brisbane. The event is also being staged to Launch the Save the Mary River
CD. I think if we throw our weight behind this function, it would achieve
pretty much the same outcome we were hoping to achieve by marching in
Brisbane. It will also be a fun day in a great location rather than the
dreary back blocks of Brisbane.
It would also be great to support Cate, even though we are not in her
electorate. She is the only ALP politician who had the guts to stand up for
us - it would be nice to return the favour and, at the same time, achieve
the same outcome as the Brisbane Rally. A Flyer publicising the event is
attached. Don't loose heart - people power can and will win out in the end.

Some news for Beattie fans:
Mr Beattie will be at Quad Park, Kawana Waters at 8.30 til about 9 am
tomorrow ( Thursday)
Quad Parkis Off NIcklin Way about 5km's south of Mooloolaba.
Apparently he is there to announce the opening of a Tafe that has already
started to be built.
If you can spare the time please head over and tell him how you feel.
Community welcome at Save the Mary meetings
IN ORDER to better communicate with Mary Valley residents – both to pass on information and collect feedback – the Save the Mary River Coordinating Group will have three open meetings over the next few months.
A committee spokesman said members were concerned that landowners in the valley were losing faith in the campaign after the election.
The spokesman also said the committee wanted to engage community members more by encouraging them to be aware of what committee members were doing to stop the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam.
“This will give everyone the chance to come along to our meeting, hear what we deal with in general business, and then have the opportunity to ask their own questions about the campaign,” the spokesman said.
“In this we hope the general community will realise that we are all working for the same goal – to stop the proposed dam – and that everyone can play a part in that process.”
Proposed open meetings for the Save The Mary River Coordinating Group will be held on:
Monday September 25 at 7pm at Kandanga Hall;
Thursday October 5 at 7pm at Ridgewood Hall; and
Monday October 16 at 7pm at the Imbil Hall.
End
Dear All,
I know in the scheme of things this is fairly trivial. On the other hand, we are looking for international recognition, and the Scott Adams / Dilbert site receives several hundred thousand visitors per week.
The annual "Weasel Award" for "Weaseliest Politician" will no doubt go to Bush or Cheney. However, based on current nominations it may only take 20 or so nominations for Beattie to get him into the top 10 for final voting. That automatically gets him an "honorable mention" as one of the weaseliest politicians on the planet!
Please take the time to look at the posting on the Traveston Swamp Forum, http://travestonswamp.info/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1147
follow the link, and nominate Beattie. Even if it is only a 1/100 chance, imagine the international impact to have him nominated in the top 10 over the Mary River Dam issue!
Time is limited, I think nominations will close either Sunday or Monday, Australian time.
Cheers,
Darren Edward.
*Just a reminder* that it is one of Gympie's big week-ends with the Gold
Rush Celebrations. Save the Mary River will have a merchandise and info
stall operating for 14 hours on Saturday. If you can assist, please call
the Info Centre on 54884 800 to register your name for the roster. The
float will also be a part of the procession.
Victor and helpers will be running another stall at Maroochydore this
week-end. Thank you.

the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam.*

MEDIA RELEASE
For immediate release, 15 December 2006
Additional Community Information Day for Proposed Traveston Crossing Dam EIS
Queensland Water Infrastructure (QWI) will hold a community information day in Maryborough in January
regarding the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
An inaugural community information day is being held at the proposed dam site at Amamoor on Saturday 16
December.
QWI Chief Executive Officer Mr Graeme Newton said that as a result of feedback from stakeholder briefings
over the past week, a number of requests for additional information days had been received.
“QWI’s community engagement consultants have advised me of requests received from councils and
community groups downstream from the proposed dam at Traveston Crossing,” Mr Newton said.
“As a result of these inquiries, we will hold a second community information day in Maryborough on Saturday
20 January 2007.
“Maryborough is on the lower Mary River and is a good central location for communities in the Wide Bay
region.”
The Maryborough information day will be held specifically to explain the community engagement process
and to encourage the community to participate in the review of the draft Terms of Reference for the EIS.
Mr Newton said specific details on location and timing will be provided as soon as arrangements for the
information day were finalised.
QWI will be conducting a number of other information days to be held throughout the EIS process during
2007.
