In 2006, Starbucks made £3.9 billion in net revenues yet for every cup of coffee Starbucks sells, farmers in coffee growing countries earn about 2p.

Ethiopia is one of those countries.

Starbucks, by refusing to sign a licensing agreement with the Ethopian government on ownership of it's coffee names refuses a better reputation for Ethiopian coffee growers which would result in greater share of the retail price. In signing this agreement, farmers in Ethopia could earn enough to send their children to school, to feed them and to provide them with health care. Over-all, the result could lift millions out of poverty.
