Is the United Nations primarily a stage where world powers seek to narrowly assert their national interests, or is it an indispensable organization in its own right, uniquely equipped to take on the challenges of peacekeeping, development and humanitarian assistance? How one answers that question is likely to reflect one's views of the institution and of Kofi Annan, who served as the U.N. secretary general from 1997-2006.

James Traub, a writer for The New York Times Magazine, was given almost unlimited access to the secretary general in 2004-05, conducting 18 interviews and sitting in on many private meetings. He paints Annan as a melancholy and decent man whose successes in his first 5-year term would be overshadowed by the discord wrought by the relentless efforts of the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush to win U.N. approval for its invasion of Iraq.
