YANGON - Emboldened after a march to see Myanmar’s detained democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, Buddhist monks have vowed fresh protests in the biggest challenge to the junta’s rule in nearly two decades.


Analysts in Thailand say the visit was a landmark moment for the protest movement, but suspect the military’s low-key reaction aims to take the steam out of the marches....

Junta soldiers kill protesting monks

THE Burmese junta opened fire on protesters in Rangoon last night, reportedly killing at least three monks, as the military moved to crush the country's biggest protest campaign in 20 years.

"Shots were fired by the security forces, first in the air, then at the demonstrators," French diplomat Emmanuel Mouriez told France's radio RTL.

"We cannot know if many people were injured but we can be sure that blood was spilled."
