EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The peaking of world oil production presents the U.S. and the world with an unprecedented risk management problem. As peaking is approached, liquid fuel prices and price volatility will increase dramatically, and, without timely mitigation, the economic, social, and political costs will be unprecedented. Viable mitigation options exist on both the supply and demand sides, but to have substantial impact, they must be initiated more than a decade in advance of peaking.

Incredible document. How can a governmnet ignore this?

What is peak oil?

It's the point that oil production starts dropping.

Welcome Doughaddix!

Frightening. Especially, when you consider our addiction to oil.:(

"Peak Oil" as a proper noun, also known as Hubbert's peak, refers to a singular event in history: the peak of the entire planet's oil production. After Peak Oil, according to the Hubbert Peak Theory, the rate of oil production on Earth will enter a terminal decline. The theory is named after American geophysicist Marion King Hubbert, who created a model of known oil reserves, and proposed, in a paper he presented to the American Petroleum Institute in 1956 [2], that production of oil from conventional sources would peak in the continental United States between 1965 and 1970, and worldwide within "about half a century" from publication.

It seems like every so many years they say this. There are still a ton of oil in Russia that is untapped and more sources under the ocean we are unable to to reach just yet. Plus technology is allowing better MPG and refining.

That's true. Especially, the ocean part BUT you have to consider population growth and China's economy growth. The demand will increase and not even Russia's untapped sources will be able to satisfy the need.

Peak oil will come.

I agree that peak oil will come. It must come because there is only finite amount of oil. I also think that we must start developing alternative energy sources while we conserve energy. However, I also remember reading and hearing that oil will be out in 10 years or 20 years as I grew up. Well, oil is still out there. I have hard time believing that peak oil will come so soon.

Even if we have already reached peak oil, they wouldn't say it or make it public.
I remember Clinton hinted something like that in one of his speeches.

hmmm....you don't see much of it in the media.
