The second richest man of the world is giving away his money. He will give 85% of his wealth (44 billion dollars) to different aid foundations. Among these foundations is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. That’s right. Bill Gates is getting more money.

"I know what I want to do," he said, "and it makes sense to get going." On that spring day his plan was uncertain in some of its details; today it is essentially complete. And it is typical Buffett: rational, original, breaking the mold of how extremely rich people donate money.

More than 30 billion dollars! All for the poor! What a mad world we live in. A brown bear dies as a hero and a billionaire has a heart.

JJ1, Bruno or whatever you want to call him – is dead. Bruno faced death on Monday morning. Killed by some “brave” hunters. He was a bear the world hasn’t seen before. Not even Finnish Hunting Dogs could catch this maverick.

The President of the German Environmental Protection Association, Hubert Weinzierl, severely criticized the shooting of the brown bear, calling it "the dumbest of all solutions." And a prominent German organization of youth who support the environment and ecology, BundJugend, also reacted with dismay, calling the killing a "tragedy for Bavarian nature protection." According to Jörn Ehlers of the nature conservation organization WWF, "Bruno found his way into our hearts, although one also had to see the danger.

There is no doubt about it. It is a tragedy. A lovely little bear whose only guilt was to be different. A moment of silence for him, please.

Jeffrey Sachs is a celebrity among economists. He walked with people like Bono and Angelina Jolie, saved some countries and he wrote a book that is, for some people, pretty much the bible for every person who is into developing countries. And for some people it is garbage. You can find our first book in the review section.

Models are hot. They are even hotter when they wear poison free clothes.

Sixteen top fashion designers, including Carmen March, Antonio Pernas and Jocomomola, showed that they believe in substance as well as style at a glittering 'Moda sin Toxicos' catwalk show in Madrid.  There they unveiled one-off creations designed to avoid the toxic chemicals widely used in clothing.

Obviously, we missed the World Refugee Day 2006 on Tuesday.

The situation of the 50,000 newly displaced is desperate. There are already more than 180,000 refugees from Darfur in 12 camps in eastern Chad. They are forced to stay in Chad, in growing frustration and despair as each planting season passes with no solution to their problem.

WWF has made a nice little Flash-movie and explains how chemicals reach the arctic. It’s funny and short. Follow the link: WWF

ai_1Bush’s war against terror reached a new peak with secret prisons and torture. But not enough, even Europe has been infected by some immoral standards.

As evidence of this programme has come to light, however, it has become clear that many European governments have adopted a “see no evil, hear no evil” approach when it comes to rendition flights using their territory and that some states have been implicated in individual cases. These states include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Turkey and EU members Germany, Italy, Sweden and the UK.

Our governments should know it better, but one government needs extra treatment:

The Human Rights Watch International Film Festival kicked off on June at the Lincoln Center (NY) and we are not invited. The reason? I don’t think the HRW knows that we exist because their e-mail address doesn’t work. (Why am I not surprised?)

Several movies deal with globalization and our relationships with those who produce for our consumption. Marc and Nick Francis’s extraordinary Black Gold takes us from Ethiopia's coffee fields to the corporate headquarters of Starbucks in Seattle as we follow Tadesse Meskela on his one-man mission to save 75,000 struggling coffee-farmers from bankruptcy.

The Film Festival will last till end of June. Still enough time to grab some popcorn.
