The extinction of polar bears?
| |
| 12/28/06
In the year 2050 polar bears are a part of our history. Gone. Forever. Except, we stop Global Warming or we clone them.
The announcement by the Bush administration comes in response to a lawsuit filed by three conservation groups, who sued the Department of the Interior in an effort to protect the polar bear from the effects of global warming.
"The science is extraordinarily clear: Global warming in the Arctic threatens polar bears," said Kassie Siegel, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity based in Tucson, Arizona.
Greenpeace and the Natural Resources Defense Council are the other groups that were part of the lawsuit. Source: CNN

Screamers & Black Gold

Here are two documentaries I like to recommend. You can find reviews, trailers, galleries, screening news and more on their websites.
The first documentary is about genocides:
Documentary feature examining why genocides keep occurring -- from the Armenian genocide in 1915, to the Holocaust, Bosnia, Rwanda and now Darfur -- through the eyes and music of the Grammy award-winning rock band “System of a Down,” based in Los Angeles, whose members are all grandchildren of genocide survivors.

The second documentary is an international award-winning look behind the 80-billion-dollar global coffee industry:
Multinational coffee companies now rule our shopping malls and supermarkets and dominate the industry worth over $80 billion, making coffee the most valuable trading commodity in the world after oil. But while we continue to pay for our lattes and cappuccinos, the price paid to coffee farmers remains so low that many have been forced to abandon their coffee fields.

Save 945 whales
| |
| 11/30/06
© Greenpeace / Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert Greenpeace has an interesting marketing idea. You can design a Save the Whales campaign. You just have to register, post your idea and rate other ideas.
Help us design a direct action to save the whales (without alienating the whalers, who are just trying to make a living). We need your help to create an amazing campaign that accomplishes the unexpected – and triggers a positive and productive public debate both in Japan and all over the world. It’s especially important to win the campaign in Japan, where most people are against whaling in Antarctica. Imagine you are designing the direct action: What would you do?

How does it smell?
| |
| 11/23/06
Perfume. That’s it. After cars, houses, bikes and clothes, we get environment friendly perfume. Here is the official statement:
"It is a limited edition perfume in which "50 ml of crude oil is exquisitely packaged and branded. Both art piece and luxury item, Crude foretells a potential future for one of the 20th century's most influential raw materials.
As our natural resources decline, the future of our society falls into question. How will everyday materials be valued, rethought, branded and consumed? Will a once plentiful resource become a luxury item? At $280 for 50ml, a barrel would be $900,000.
Also included in this range, a 1ml vial on card tester, that is a beautiful replication of a luxury perfume sample, normally given free as product promotion. As with all branded cosmetic launches, there is a “gift with purchase.”

Review: Grave of the Fireflies
| |
| 11/17/06
Grave of the Fireflies is one of my all-time favorite movies and one of the most impressive anti-war movies you will ever see. Grave of the Fireflies was made by Isao Takahata, friend and fellow animator of Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Chihiro).
