11.5 million. That is not the amount of money Angelina Jolie will get for her next movie. No, it’s the amount of people who are suffering from the famine in Somalia, one of the worst humanitarian crises in the history of mankind. 11.5 million people can’t get enough food to survive.

This humanitarian disaster is a good reason to take a closer at the most hailed and applauded humanitarian star of Hollywood: Angelina Jolie, UNHCR Goodwill-Ambassador and mother of six children.

It’s not a good time for celebrities and their do-gooder “work”. First, Lady Gaga has been accused of a charity bracelet scam and now, Farrah Fawcett’s Foundation is been accused of mismanagement and fraud by the California Attorney General's Office of Charitable Trust.

Chairman Richard B. Francis calls it “a witch hunt”.

True or not, I have the feeling that more of these celebrity charity organizations are going to collapse.

Somalia’s famine has become one of the biggest humanitarian disasters in history with more than 11 million affected people. UN officials claim that 750.000 people could die in the next couple of months.

US students have to pay an insane amount of money for the privilege to attend a University. Student Loan Debt is a big concern for most young people. Now, the idea to forgive student loan debt has its own petition:

“For over 30 years, the rich have gotten richer, the poor have gotten poorer, and the middle class is slowly but surely being squeezed out of existence. Instead of more of the same corporate welfare/"trickle-down" economics that have been an abysmal failure for the middle class, why not try a trickle-up approach to rebuilding our economy by targeting relief at those most likely to actually help grow the economy?

Therefore, we, the undersigned, strongly encourage Congress and the President to support H. Res 365, introduced by Rep. Hansen Clarke (D-MI), seeking student loan forgiveness as a means of economic stimulus.”

They need 270,000 signatures and have already 287,463.

Marty McFly’s Nike shoes from Back to the Future II are now for real and can be bought. BUT there are only 1500 of these sneakers made and you have to buy them on ebay. And they are pricy. At least 2500$ a pair. Why? The money goes to Michael J. Fox’ Foundation financing research to cure the Parkinson's disease.

Charity Frauds certainly have no shame. Now, the Associated Press investigates several charity organizations:

“The AP investigation identified 325 charities created after 9/11 to serve victims, their relatives and their memories. Those nonprofits collected $1.5 billion for their causes, which included programs to help those affected by the attacks, memorials to honor the victims, and services and cash provided to relatives of victims.”

Synposis:

"It will be set between 1988 – when Aung San Suu Kyi left Oxford to visit her sick mother and ended up staying – and 1999, the year Aris died after being diagnosed with cancer. Aris had been forbidden from entering Burma, a decision that left Aung San Suu Kyi with the almost impossible decision of whether to stay or go."

The Lady, starring Michelle Yeoh and directed by Luc Besson, will have a world premiere on September 12th, 2011 at the 36th Toronto International Film Festival. The movie will be released in November 2011.

The media coverage of recent events like hurricane Irene made me think about journalism and in what direction this profession has evolved. With the News of the World scandal and tabloid journalists like Piers Morgan on the rise, the decay of journalism has reached a new dimension.
